Fives - Baotou case study

Case study: Baotou’s 10-year program

China’s Baotou Iron and Steel Group contracted Fives to help entering the automotive steel sector. The partnership began by working with the client to define the goals they wanted to achieve. Fives identified the services and software tools needed to achieve those targets, and then made a detailed plan for the modernization of the complete steelmaking process with principal targets for product grades, product management and reporting.

As a result of the market and process insight Fives was able to offer, the two companies signed a long-term contract incorporating a 10-year programme, as well as design and supply of two complete CGLs and furnaces for two CALs for the development and production of automotive steel sheets. This is a unique cooperation because Fives will accompany Baotou Steel through the entire process of entering a new market, not just providing tools but also equipping the customer with a customized methodology.

The 10-year programme is focused on high-end technological and process expertise across all upstream and downstream processes, including steel making, hot rolling, pickling, cold rolling, annealing and galvanizing. The programme includes training, technical support, development and certification of new automotive steel products, including the latest advanced high-strength sheets.
