Stein specialty furnaces

Stein specialty furnaces are used to heat treat strip coils, wired rod coils, cast iron tubes or graphite electrodes. They include a series of heating and holding chambers as well as heating systems, such as:

  • Rotary hearth furnaces
  • Bell furnaces
  • Graphite electrode bogie hearth furnaces
  • Chain pushers
  • Chamber, in/out furnaces
  • Vertical or horizontal ladle preheaters and dryers
  • Controlled cooling hoods
  • Vertical shaft heaters
  • Pit furnaces
  • Cooling beds for tubes

Combustion technology for Stein specialty furnaces

Combustion technology includes direct fire high speed or self-recuperative burners as well as electric heating. On/off pulsating technology facilitates optimum combustion efficiency, while NOx emissions are significantly reduced. This high speed, high flexibility combustion technology can be operated with all kinds of fuels such as natural gas, LPG, HFO, LDO or mixed gas. Process temperature can be up to 1200˚C.

Fives supplied, on a turnkey basis, a Stein baking furnace that required cycles with a duration of approximately 18 days for the baking process of graphite electrodes. Gas-fired high speed burners together with strict and accurate control of the air/gas ratio and oxygen content inside the chamber eliminate the explosive atmosphere present during the tar evaporation process.

Tightness between the exterior and chamber is essential in order to avoid spontaneous combustion of the gases. It could be obtained due to specific door sealing devices and water trough systems. A water injection system is installed in order to safely cool the load prior to unloading.

Load in the furnace can reach up to 460 tons with furnace inside dimensions of 17.8 x 5.9 x 4.1m (L x W x H).

The environtmental and pollution control is implemented by an in-line incinerator, installed in the waste gas extraction stack.

The furnace is completed with a soot burner at the hearth level, an automatic control system and HMI.
