Intelligent steel: big and smart data at Future Steel Forum
The forum, a live discussion of the issues surrounding Industry 4.0 or “smart manufacturing”, hosted speakers from academia and the steel industry to look at how innovative technologies can be brought together to revolutionize the way steel is made during June 14-15, 2017 in Warsaw, Poland.
“There is a lot of technological innovation going on in the steel industry. Is the steel industry taking full advantage of it?” asks Matthew Moggridge, Editor-in-Chief of Steel Times International, the organizer of the Future Steel Forum.

Jean-Paul Nauzin, CEO of Fives KEODS, and Kristiaan Van Teutem, Vice-President of Fives’ Steel division presented the case study “Fives and Baotou Iron & Steel Group: a 10-year digital program to develop a wide range of high value-added automotive steel”. The case study covered the experience Fives has been undergoing to understand the steelmaker’s real needs and targets, formulate the right strategy and choose necessary tools to achieve a goal: production of high-value steels. The case study captured the audience and sparked a lively discussion.
Yannick Leprêtre, Fives Group Chief Innovation and Digital Officer, highlighted digital technologies which are able to improve operational efficiency. His presentation “Optimizing the plants of the future thanks to smart data & services” covered digitalisation of the value chain, automation and robotics, a human factor in the plant, control and monitoring, energy efficiency and environment, new materials and manufacturing technologies.
