Aeris, after-pot cooling
For galvanizing processes, the cooling tower design remains a major issue for product quality. The high capacity requirements have resulted in increased blowing velocities and higher cooling towers, both of which have a detrimental effect on cooling control due to concern over strip stabilization. Strip fluttering causes both additional zinc consumption and reduced coating quality, both of which can be costly.
Aeris®, Fives' proprietary after-pot cooling technology, is an efficient and flexible cooling system that improves strip stability by enabling the reduction of the cooling length. By increasing the blowing speed of cooling air, the cooling length can be significantly shorter while the cooling capacity is maintained at the same level.
Fives developed the Aeris® technology at its own test centre by building several scale 1 test benches. The research works were conducted together with renowned institutes specializing in aerodynamics (Institut Aérotechnique, Saint-Cyr-l'École, France) and fluid flow thermal transfer (Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic). The new technology was tested and optimized in a pilot bench facility before being introduced to the market for hot dip galvanizing lines.

The Aeris® technology can be applied to wet and dry processes
Dry Aeris® - air cooling for dry processes uses only one fan for each blowing box with a symmetrical blowing circuit to the strip axis, ensuring equal air velocity on both sides of the strip.

For galvanealed processes:

Wet Aeris® uses a special nozzle design to achieve fog cooling to the desired capacity over a much shorter cooling length, typically one tenth of standard cooling technology. No compressed air is required, making this a highly energy efficient system.
In addition to the water & air knife equipment, a mechanical quick sealing device is installed. This prevents water falling into the pot in case of power outage.
The Aeris®, after-pot cooling technology improves strip stabilization, while the footprint is significantly reduced: the Dry Aeris® reduces cooling length by 25% and the Wet Aeris® decreases it by 70%.
